Your baby is sitting up on their own, flashing that gummy grin, and showing off their personality. It is the perfect time for a milestone session, and one of the first questions parents ask me is what their baby should wear.

Here are my tips for choosing outfits that photograph beautifully.

Keep it simple

I believe less is more when it comes to what to wear to any photography session. I prefer classic, simple looks with minimalistic patterns and no wording or big logos that will distract from your baby's beautiful face and features.

My style tends to lean toward vintage, rustic, boho, and what some people call cottagecore. I am a big fan of neutrals, earth tones, and muted colors. Think soft creams, warm tans, dusty blues, sage greens, and gentle pinks rather than bright neon or bold primary colors.

Textures Over Patterns

Solid colors and subtle textures photograph much better than busy patterns. A chunky knit romper, a simple linen outfit, or a cotton dress with delicate embroidery will look timeless in your images. Busy prints, large logos, and character outfits tend to date photos quickly and pull attention away from your baby's expressions.

If you do want a pattern, keep it small and subtle, thin stripes, tiny florals, or a classic gingham can work beautifully.

What About Accessories?

For girls, simple headbands, small bows, and delicate floral crowns are always lovely. I keep a collection of accessories in the studio that you are welcome to use. For boys, suspenders, bow ties, and simple hats can add personality without overwhelming the photo.

The key is to keep accessories proportional to your baby, nothing too large or heavy that will be distracting or uncomfortable.

Bring Two to Three Options

I recommend bringing two to three outfit options to your session. This gives us variety in your gallery and lets us mix up the look between setups. A good combination might be one dressier outfit, one casual romper or onesie, and one that is more minimal, like just a diaper cover or bloomers.

What Should Parents Wear?

If you are planning to jump in for a few family shots during the session, coordinate with your baby without matching exactly. Stick to the same neutral and earth tone palette, and avoid bold patterns or logos. Solid colors in complementary tones always photograph best.

Do Not Stress About It

At the end of the day, this session should be about capturing your baby's growing personality, catching the light in their eyes when they laugh, the dimples in their cheeks, or those crazy hairs that just will not stay down. The outfit is the frame, but your baby is the masterpiece.

If you are ever unsure, send me a photo of your outfit options before the session and I am happy to help you choose. Visit my contact page to book your milestone session.
